NY State Department of Health Names Experts for New Fracking Study

The New York State Department of Health has named experts to review an environmental study of the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing known as fracking. The review is in response to the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) November 29 deadline for New York fracking regulations.

Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens rejected a request by health and environmental groups for a comprehensive and independent health impact analysis before fracking is allowed to resume, according to a CBS article. Instead, the state health commissioner and outside experts will complete the review. The DEC has refused transparency of the study’s findings to the public.

Fracking releases gas by injecting a well of chemically treated water into rock. As water flushes down a pipeline to fracture the rock, it can force contaminates into the soil and nearby ground water. While some argue that fracking pollution is rare, environmental groups and some scientists believe more research is necessary before dismissing the cons of fracking problems. Many have demanded the health department’s review meet the standards of a full health impact assessment along with more transparency to the public regarding their findings.

New York suspended shale gas drilling in 2008. Regulations regarding fracking in New York State may have to be reopened to public comment if the DEC review deadline isn’t met.

Lawsuits continue to rise as residents near fracking operations are in danger of exposure to the toxic chemicals used in the process. Similar issues exist in other states such as Pennsylvania, where two thirds of the state contains Marcellus shale.
